Biography

Dr Patrick Porter joined the department in August 2006. He took a BA/LLB at the University of Melbourne. He then moved to Magdalen College Oxford, where he graduated with a DPhil in History. His doctoral thesis examined religious rhetoric and combat motivation in the British and German armies in the First World War. He was a Fairfax Oxford Australia scholar and a Fellow of the Institute of Historical Research in London, and was a history tutor at Oxford. He is currently writing on the history of American Grand Strategy since 1941, and was recently awarded a Grant from the British Academy to continue his research interest in the emerging field of War and Orientalism.
