Professor Ben Rampton
Professor of applied and socio-linguistics
About me
I teach a range of courses in applied and socio-linguistics, and my research involves ethnographic and interactional discourse analysis. I cross-refer quite frequently to work in anthropology, sociology and cultural studies, and my publications cover urban multilingualism, language, youth, popular culture, ethnicities and class, language education and classroom discourse, second language learning, and research methodology.
I am the Director of the Centre for Language Discourse and Communication and the current Convenor of the UK Linguistic Ethnography Forum. I am also the Director of the ESRC-RDI Programme on ‘Ethnography, Language and Communication’. I was a Linguistics Panellist in RAE 2001, and I have an Honorary Doctorate from Copenhagen University. I am, or I’ve been, on the editorial board of a number of journals (Journal of Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics, Journal of Linguistic Anthropology, Sociolinguistic Studies, Applied Linguistics, International Journal of Bilingualism, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, International Review of Applied Linguistics (IRAL), Journal of Applied Linguistics, Research in the Teaching of English, Reading Research Quarterly).
