Martin Keulertz

Research

This doctoral research analyses the recent foreign direct investments in African land and water. By analysing the (virtual) water/food/trade nexus, pragmatic alternatives of investing countries to demand-side management will be studied. The opportunities and risks of agricultural land acquisition will be critically analysed in order to analyse the economic, political and social outcomes of such investments in the target countries with its effect on the global political economy. Conceptually, the American school of pragmatism will interconnected with the Frankfurt School of social theory, namely Herbert Marcuse's One-Dimensional-Man, to account for drivers and factors in water management on the national and international scale.
