War Studies Group events archive

Petraeus The Department of War Studies offers a thriving events programme. From lectures and seminars to networking, careers events and residential trips there are ample opportunities for students to contribute to lively debates. King's guest speakers range from military personnel (Gen Petraeus pic) and academics, who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise. As well as key departmental events, many of the research centres within the War Studies Groups host seminar series.

Professor Raphael Cohen-Almagor, University of Hull.
Professor Cohen-Almagor has published extensively in the fields of political science, philosophy, law, media ethics, medical ethics, sociology, history and education. He was Visiting Professor at UCLA and Johns Hopkins, Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars, Founder and Director of the Center for Democratic Studies, University of Haifa, and Member of The Israel Press Council. The South Caucasus: the regional conflicts, challenges and prospects
Craig Oliphant OBE, SAFERWORLD, Senior Adviser, Europe/Central Asia. Until the end of 2010, he worked in the diplomatic service and was Head of the Eastern Research Group in the Foreign Office, focusing on the South Caucasus and protracted conflicts. Craig has held posts in at NATO as an adviser on Russia/FSU and as a regional adviser to the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.

Democracy after the War on Terror: Syria and the Wider Middle East in the Arab Spring
Professor Sadik al-Azm will speak about the current uprising in Syria and the Wider Middle East, and reflect on its impacts on the region’s political and ideological landscape, from democratisation to nationalism and Islamism. Professor al-Azm is one of the most notable contemporary Middle Eastern thinkers, and is emeritus professor of European Philosophy at the University of Damascus. He is currently a fellow at the University of Bonn, Germany.
This is the first event of the new seminar series and is hosted by the Centre for the Study of Political Community

Professor Antonin Cohen, Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. Professor Antonin Cohen's work focuses on the historical sociology of Europe’s construction. He has written extensively on the use of Bourdieu in International Relations, prosopographical analysis, Political Science and Europe.

Blair's Just War: Iraq and the Illusion of Morality (Palgrave), Dr Peter Lee, Lecturer in the Air Power Studies Division of the Defence Studies Department.
Bringing together both contemporary and historical just war concepts, Peter Lee shows that Blair's illusion of morality evaporated quickly and irretrievably after the 2003 Iraq invasion because the ideas Blair relied upon were taken out of their historical context and applied in a global political system where they no longer hold sway.

Ekaterina Braginskaia is a PhD Candidate at the University of Edinburgh. She has previously worked as a Research Fellow on the ESRC-funded project on 'Radicalisation and Islam: the Russian dimension' . Her current research focuses on a comparative analysis of Muslim representation in Britain and Russia.

Afghanistan: The Way Out" by Jonathan Steele, The Guardian
JONATHAN STEELE was Washington Bureau Chief, Moscow Bureau Chief, and Chief Foreign Correspondent for the Guardian. He is currently a columnist on international affairs. His latest book, “Ghosts of Afghanistan”, which compares the Soviet and US occupations, was published in October. He covered the Soviet occupation in the 1980s and the current US/British one. Hosted by the Centre for the Study of Political Community and co-hosted by the Afghan Studies Group.

The Asia Foundation presented findings from ‘Afghanistan in 2011: A Survey of the Afghan people’ – the most comprehensive public opinion poll in the country, covering all 34 provinces. The survey includes face-to-face interviews with approximately 6,500 Afghan men and women on the most pressing issues facing the country, including perceptions of security, corruption, the economy, development, women’s rights, peace and reconciliation .

Pakistan's challenges
Dr. Maleeha Lodhi, Special Adviser for international affairs to Pakistan’s largest media conglomerate, the Jang/Geo Group.Dr. Lodhi has twice served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States as well as to the United Kingdom. She has been editor of two of Pakistan’s leading daily news papers, The News and The Muslim. She served on the UN Secretary General’s advisory board on disarmament, taught at the London School of Economics and has been a fellow at Harvard University and at Washington’s Woodrow Wilson Centre.
