Mental health policy and funding

Our Impact

We have contributed to guidance by NHS England regarding involving and supporting partners and family members in perinatal services. The good practice guidance and accompanying video animation, on involving and supporting partners and significant others in the perinatal period, is for commissioners and clinicians working in specialist perinatal mental health services.

Our E-Risk study findings on air pollution and general mental health in children and psychotic experiences during adolescence were used in the House of Lords in 2019 and 2022 to advocate for quicker lowering of road traffic emissions in the UK to protect the future mental health of children and young people.

Another E-risk study on trauma exposure drew attention to the high prevalence of such experiences but limited treatment options for young people in Britain, has been cited in several government policies. It was also cited in our framework for child and adolescent mental health in the context of emergencies and disaster.

The SGDP-led GLAD study has become the largest single depression and anxiety study in the world. It has been cited by the UK government, informing its policy for health care sciences. Similarly, our eating disorders work is informing government policy, and resulting in increased funding for eating disorder research in the UK and beyond.
