Dr Youssef Mahmoud a Tunisian natural, started out his career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Tunis. Following that, he worked with the United Nations where he held several senior positions. Dr Mahmoud served as the Executive Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Burundi (BINUB) from 2007 to 2009. After that he was appointed as the Secretary General’s Special Representative and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT). He left the UN at the end of the assignment.
He is now a Senior Adviser at the International Peace Institute where he supports the Africa, Middle East and peace operations programmes. When he can, he teaches graduate courses on conflict analysis and post-conflict policies in fragile contexts. Heis also on the board of several not-for-profit organizations in the United States and Tunisia.
