About the Speaker
Julia C. Strauss is Professor of Chinese Politics in the Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS. Her research interests are in state and institution building, in China and Taiwan, and in China's contemporary "going out" to Africa and Latin America. She is the former editor of The China Quarterly. Publications include China and Africa: Emerging Patterns in Globalization and Development (Cambridge University Press, 2009), The History of the People’s Republic of China (Cambridge University Press, 2006) and the monograph Strong Institutions in Weak Polities: State Building in Republican China, 1927–1940 (Clarendon, 1998). She is now working on a monograph that compares regime consolidation in the PRC and Taiwan in the early 1950s.
