10 spots to eat lunch on the Strand Campus

There are obviously many more great lunch spots, both within King's and nearby, but these are my tried and tested favourites.

  1. Chapters (King's Building, level two)

Chapters is an ideal place to get some studying done or meet up with friends in between classes. It specialises in cakes, pastries and coffee, with plenty of quick lunch options available. Takeaway or sit in and enjoy your food or drink in their large seating area. It’s particularly handy for War Studies students as it’s located just a few floors below the department.

2. King's Kitchen and The Vault (Bush House South East Wing, level one)

Want a wide variety of lunch options at a reasonable price? Head to level one Bush House South East Wing and check out King's Kitchen and The Vault. Not only is the food tasty but both locations have a lovely modern feel and are a great place to enjoy your lunch, alone or with friends.

King's Kitchen – my favourite location to grab lunch on campus – has 4 main stations to choose from: the European Station, the Asian Station, the Pizza Bar and the Salad Bar.

With a new menu this year, The Vault has a variety of hot lunch options and a brand new quick meal box range — choose between your protein, carbohydrate and salad / vegetables. I personally can't wait to try this one out!

3. The Shack (Bush House South East Wing, ground floor)

The Shack is KCLSU's coffee shop & café on the ground floor of Bush House. It serves a range of snacks and grab and go lunch options but is primarily a place to grab a coffee. Go for its relaxed atmosphere, it’s a great location to get some studying done or meet up for a coffee with friends.

4. The Terrace Café (Macadam Building, ground floor)

The Terrace Café has a large indoor seating area, as well as an outdoor terrace surrounded by greenery where you can enjoy the fresh air and even see the London Eye! They serve a range of lunch options and have vending machines for lighter snacks. Prefer to bring your own food? Heat it up (outside of lunch hours) in their microwaves. Even if you choose to sit inside, there are large glass windows so you can see out onto the terrace and beyond!

5. Roots Plant-Based Café (Bush House Central Building, level eight)

Roots is a vegan café located on the eighth floor of Bush House. Not only are there a range of vegan options available each day, but you can also enjoy them with the most stunning views. I would say the views from the terrace are probably some of, if not the best, in London. You can see everything from Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge to the Shard, the London Eye, and Parliament. It is certainly a place you must visit, at least once to get those snaps for 'the gram'!

Places to sit and eat food on campus in King's:

6. The Meadow (Bush House South East Wing, level eight)

The Meadow is the first of my two favourite places at King's to eat my own lunch. It’s a super relaxed environment with an indoor garden vibe, having everything from fake grass and plants to beanbags. And if this wasn't already good enough, there are insane views when you look out of the windows in both directions (along the Strand and towards St Pauls). Also, if you want to heat up your own food, you can pop down to the seventh floor and use the microwaves in the Loft.

7. War Studies Department (King's Building, level six and seven)

If you're a War Studies or International Relations student, you will want to familiarise yourself with the War Studies department. Holding some amazing views, there is a bench by one of the windows where you can sit and eat your lunch between classes.

Places near King's to sit and eat food/get food:

8. Somerset House (Strand, London, WC2R 1LA)

If you don't already know, Somerset House joins onto the Strand building. The courtyard is a great area to sit and enjoy your lunch outside on a lovely sunny day. There is also a little coffee shop/café there if you wanted to get some food.

9. South Bank (across Waterloo Bridge from Strand Campus)

If you pop along Waterloo Bridge (it only takes a few minutes) you reach the South Bank, which has loads of different food and drink places, from actual restaurants and cafés to pop-ups and street food stalls. There are also loads of benches along the river where you can sit and enjoy your lunch, and if you head further towards the London Eye, you'll find Jubilee Gardens, which is a nice grass area where you could have a picnic in the summer.

10. Lincoln's Inn Fields (Lincoln's Inn Fields, Holborn, Camden, London, WC2A 3ED)

If you walk 10 mins north from King's you'll find Lincoln's Inn Fields, a lovely park area where you can enjoy lunch between classes on a nice day. For those who say London isn't a green city, it's just not true. There are a bunch of parks and green spaces all over London, perfect to get some fresh air or have a picnic with your friends on a sunny day.
