App guides tourists around London with augmented reality

With over 30 million tourists heading to London each year, a new app due to be launched later this year aims to help guide those visiting the UK’s capital, using innovative new technology.

Clarence Ji, a fourth year King’s Informatics student, developed RideLDN in 2016, a mobile app designed to help tourists in the capital identify significant landmarks and sights close by. It utilises augmented reality technology to show visitors significant landmarks nearby as they wander through the city.

By combining GPS and 4G technology, RideLDN aims to be a low cost way of guiding visitors around London. In 2016 with the support of King’s Entrepreneurship Institute, Clarence pitched RideLDN to investors at a Startup Europe MY-WAY event and was voted one of the top 10 entrepreneurs in London under 30 by Capital Enterprise. The RideLDN app will be available for download in July 2017.

Originally from Harbin, China, Clarence came to King’s in 2013 and has found success at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon EU, been awarded the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference Scholarship twice, which invites student developers to attend their conference.

As part of the Entrepreneurship Institute’s King20 Accelerator programme Clarence will receive ongoing guidance to support his hopes of starting his own tech company in the near future.
