King's team wins national competition

A team of four languages students from the School of Arts and Humanities have won the Law School Challenge 2013/14 - a competition in which universities enter teams in order to raise money for the charities Bar Pro Bono Society and LawWorks, who both provide pro bono legal aid for those who cannot afford legal representation and advice.

Christopher Claxton-Shirley - a student in the Department of French - was part of the successful team which raised over £2,000 by organising and participating in events which ranged from cake sales to skydives. ‘We all decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to demonstrate our interest in law and represent King’s at the same time.

‘Winning the Law School Challenge was an amazing experience, not least because we were invited to the House of Commons to receive an award for our hard work and were able to meet the Attorney General, representatives of legal charities and several MPs. We hope that our fundraising will benefit many people in need.’

Neaty Soopaul, also in the Department of French, said, ‘All four of us have an interest in law and when we were presented with the opportunity to take part in the challenge, we were all very willing to compete.’

The team's fundraising efforts culminated in a skydive: ‘Chris spent endless hours organising the event; I was crazy enough and actually skydived! All of this paid off as a lot of money was raised by our jumpers. We were all there on the day and it is safe to say that we all had a great time!’

Wan Fan (Department of French) and Ziyana Rajabali (Spanish and Latin American Studies) are the other members of the successful team.
