Now Accepting Applications: Physical Protection at Facilities Holding Nuclear and Radioactive Materials Workshop
The Nuclear Security Culture Consortium, sponsored by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), will hold an IAEA-endorsed workshop on the Fundamentals of Physical Protection in London for individuals accountable for nuclear security. The workshop is intended to introduce participants to nuclear threats posed by non-state actors and how physical protection systems and other measures can be used to mitigate them. This international workshop draws upon the inter-disciplinary nature of the consortium that includes regulatory, governmental, industrial and academic specialists. Drawing heavily on examples of international and UK best practice, the workshop includes lectures and seminar format, group activities, real-life case studies, a detailed table-top exercise and a visit to a UK licensed nuclear site.
The workshop will deliver material in line with IAEA and international best practice, including sessions on the following topics: nuclear and radiological materials/facilities; threat assessment and DBT; vulnerability assessment and vital areas; legal framework; relationship to safety and safeguards; the role of the regulator; physical protection technologies and systems; nuclear security culture; the role of the guard force; contingency planning and emergency preparedness; security by design; testing and evaluation of physical protection systems; preventive and protective measures against insider threats; information security; and cyber security.
The workshop is relevant to individuals working at nuclear and radiological sites as well as the regulator, and it may also be relevant for those at research institutes and academia. Ideally, participants will have around five years of professional experience, a basic knowledge of nuclear security and some level of accountability for this at their organisation.
To apply, complete the online application available here by the 2nd of April 2018. Please direct any questions to Hannah Mulvey (csss@kcl.ac.uk). The workshop is offered free of charge and there is funding to support travel, accommodation and visa costs.
