Presenting at the 2017 ISYP Conference: A Student Perspective
Written by Deanra Moerdaning
The 10th International Student/Young Pugwash (ISYP) conference, “Nuclear World Order: Global and Regional Security Issues and Prospects for Cooperation,” that was held in Astana, Kazakhstan on 23-24 August 2017, brought together young people from 20 countries who share the same passion for international security and concerns over nuclear danger. Participants had the chance to present their research, which encompassed a vast range of subjects, such as: measuring disarmament progress; interplay between disarmament and non-proliferation objectives; future of deterrence; impact of emerging technologies; assessment of regional challenges in North-East Asia, South Asia and the Middle-East. ISYP was followed by the 62nd Pugwash International Conference (25-29 August 2017), whose participants included some of the world’s leading experts and practitioners in nuclear arms control and disarmament.
I feel privileged to be a part of this conference. Not only did I get the chance to attend the 62nd Pugwash International Conference, I also had the opportunity to engage with inspiring young people and fellow students from all over the world and more importantly receive valuable input and suggestions for my paper, ‘An Indonesian Perspective on the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI)’ that I presented at this conference.
