Academic promotions and teaching fellowships celebrated
Staff promotions are among our most exciting announcements. This year, on 3 October, we celebrated the promotions of five academics and, for the first time, the award of fellowships to 11 clinical teachers within the Dental Institute.
Academic promotions are difficult to achieve, requiring success in obtaining research grant funding, publishing the results of that work, excellent teaching and service to the Institute and society. Panels of experts, both inside and outside of the College must attest to the quality and impact of their achievements.
The following academics have been recognised for their hard work, outstanding accomplishments and dedication to research and teaching.
Dr Jennifer Gallagher (Dental Public Health) was promoted to Professor from Reader.
Dr Michael Escudier (Oral Medicine) was promoted to Reader from Senior Lecturer.
Dr Karen Liu (Craniofacial Development & Stem Cell Biology) was promoted to Reader from Lecturer.
Dr Sasha Scambler (Dental Public Health) and Dr Suzanne Scott (Dental Practice & Policy) were both promoted to Senior Lecturer from Lecturer.
This year, we began the award of the ‘Fellow’ title for enhanced recognition of teachers who make significant additional effort like promotions, contributions of nominees are reviewed and decisions made by a panel of judges.
Teaching Fellowships were awarded to:
Principal Teaching Fellow – Dr Brian Davies and Dr Kathryn Derringer
Senior Teaching Fellow – Dr George Aristidou, Dr Ellie Heidari, Dr Helena Lewis-Greene, Mr Stevan Milson, Mr Michael Thomas and Mr Jonathan Turner
Teaching Fellow – Dr Caroline Boyle, Dr Robert Caplin and Dr Kevin Chau.
The Dean of the Dental Institute Professor Dianne Rekow said: ‘One of my great pleasures is to formally recognise the accomplishments of and contributions of our staff. The remarkable passion and achievements of these individuals is among the Institute’s most valuable assets’.
