Susan Castillo awarded British Association of American Studies Honorary Fellowship

Susan Castillo, Harriet Beecher Stowe Professor of American Studies at King’s College London, has been awarded a prestigious Honorary Fellowship by the British Association of American Studies (BAAS).

The BAAS Honorary Fellowship, inaugurated in 2009, recognises American Studies academics who have made an outstanding contribution to the association, to their institution, and to the American Studies community in general over the course of a distinguished career.

The award recognises Professor Castillo’s record of interdisciplinary scholarship across the fields of American literature, history, sociology, gender studies, political science, anthropology, and the history of art. She sits on the Executive Boards of the International American Studies Association, the National Conference of University Professors, and the British Association for American Studies

Martin Halliwell, BAAS President, said of the award: “I am delighted to award the 2012 BAAS Honorary Fellowship to Professor Susan Castillo, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Professor of American Studies at King’s College London. The award marks Susan’s influential and sustained contribution to American Studies across the course of her career.

“Professor Castillo has inspired many of those who have worked with her – as staff, students, and collaborators – and continues to do so with an amiable, generous personality that is exceptional. She is a most deserving recipient of the 2012 Honorary Fellowship.”

This 2012 award follows those BAAS has given to four equally distinguished scholars – Richard King and Mick Gidley in 2009, Michael Heale in 2010, and Helen Taylor in 2011 – to mark outstanding contributions to the development of American Studies in the UK.
