Winners of first Allesch-Taylor Scholarships for Entrepreneurship announced

The Entrepreneurship Institute, King’s College London is delighted to announce the winners of the inaugural Allesch-Taylor Scholarships for Entrepreneurship 2016-2017. Each will receive awards of up to £10,000 from Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE.

The Allesch-Taylor Scholarships are open to ventures on the ‘King’s20’ accelerator programme, whose teams are made up of King’s students, staff and alumni from the past seven years.

The winners are:

  • Styled By Africa – who use contemporary fashion as a means to support African manufacturing and encourage sustainable trade.
  • Project Medicine – founded by two junior doctors in London, Project Medicine improves patient care through technology and mobile apps.
  • The Medic app - simplifies the setting up of short and long-term medication reminders, using artificial intelligence to optimise the impact of medication doses.
  • Oslr - helps medical students and doctors to organise peer-to-peer and bedside teaching in a busy hospital environment.
  • 1ClickPromos – for £1000, 1clickpromos sends a professional camera operator to any London location for a half-day to film anything from product demos, live events, speeches and interviews.
  • Roomor – takes the hassle out of finding a home. Answer a few questions and the Roomor app will make a shortlist for you to review and arrange viewings.
  • Helper Bees – helps match families to experienced help, for example nannies, paediatric, neonatal and midwifery nurses.
  • Bahati Books – an e-book publishing company that spreads African literature, by African authors, to a global audience.
  • Smart Gloves – creates wearable technology that lets people make and learn music.
  • Moovr – connects truck drivers and farmers in developing countries, providing more options for the movement of goods and livestock to markets and other points of sale.

The investment from Allesch-Taylor, Professor of Entrepreneurship at King’s College, a financier, philanthropist and serial entrepreneur, will be used to help these ventures grow – from building their products and developing new ideas to scaling up their revenue. He said:

I am passionate about supporting young entrepreneurs who take the opportunity to have a positive impact in the world through sustainable and ambitious business. King’s has some of the brightest and most diverse talent in the world and I am excited to be supporting these new ventures on their journey.”

Dr Adam Pennycuick and Dr Tom Simpson from Oslr said, “Winning The Allesch-Taylor Scholarship is such fantastic news for us. We’ve worked hard to get this far and are at an exciting stage of our business. The money will go a long way in helping us grow our audiences and refine the app. We have big ambitions for the future, and the Scholarship will help us achieve them.”

Accelerator Manager Ed Halliday said, “We’re honoured to have Stefan’s support. The winning ventures have great potential, and these scholarships can really make the difference at a vital time in their startup journeys. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Stefan to support more King’s entrepreneurs into successful futures.

The Entrepreneurship Institute is on the lookout for the next wave of bright ideas to support in the next academic year. Applications to the 2017-18 King’s20 accelerator open in April 2017.

Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE is a serial entrepreneur and philanthropist, having co-founded or invested in more than 40 companies in a wide range of sectors including property, retail, hospitality, industrial, technology, sports, medical, banking and financial services. He is the Professor of Entrepreneurship at King’s College London and currently serves on the Board of 10 companies and charities, chairing five. His current roles include being founder and Chairman of the award-winning Department of Coffee and Social Affairs, through which he has been able to put into practice and succeed in his belief that profit-maximising businesses can have a positive social impact. He believes and can demonstrate that entrepreneurship should be harnessed and developed as a tool for growth, innovation and societal improvement in rapidly changing times.
