King's College London celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week 2016

King’s College London held workshops, a high-profile talk, student conference and hackathon, and launched a new student radio show, during the world-wide celebration of entrepreneurship 14-20 November.

British fashion designer and entrepreneur Dame Vivienne Westwood DBE kicked off the week presenting her initiative Intellectuals Unite, in a talk organised by KCL’s Environment Society.

Students took part in a ‘Creative Thinking Methods’ workshop on Wednesday led by King’s Entrepreneurship Institute and Jeff Skinner, Executive Director of the Deloitte Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, and gained practical experience developing and testing entrepreneurial ideas. 

On Thursday, Fares Alaboud, King’s alumni and founder of The Medic app, led a web development skills workshop for students, staff and alumni on the Kings20 accelerator programme to learn how to create websites and apps for their ventures.

King’s took to the airwaves on Thursday in the first KCL Radio ‘Like A Boss’ show - discussing all things entrepreneurship with guest speakers - the Entrepreneurship Institute and Fight the Fads, an award-winning startup founded by three King’s student nutritionists.

At the weekend, KCL’s Student Entrepreneurs Society held a conference celebrating student entrepreneurship. Speakers included Bailey Kursar, Head of Marketing at Monzo and Hilal Koc, Partnerships Manager at LinkedIn, and covered themes including creativity in entrepreneurship, careers, and how to pitch to investors.

On Saturday King’s also came together with the community for #EyeHack- Science Gallery London’s hackathon in partnership with Blippar for Education, UglyDuck and King’s Entrepreneurship Institute. People with different skills collaborated to create an innovative blipp inspired by colour and vision.

Ana Bakshi, Head of Entrepreneurship at King’s said, “Student and staff entrepreneurs can be found in every faculty at King’s, from life sciences, medicine, nursing and midwifery, to arts and humanities, social sciences and public policy, and Global Entrepreneurship Week is a fantastic opportunity to come together, make new connections, and showcase what brilliant entrepreneurial talent we have.”
