Major International Conference to Explore Marx's 'Capital' 150 years on

September 2017 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of the first volume of ‘Capital’ by Karl Marx. The final three-volume treatise; ‘Capital: A Critique of Political Economy’, remains the most profound and challenging study of the logic of the capitalist system that still dominates our lives today.

To mark this significant anniversary the Department of European & International Studies (School of Politics & Economics) together with thenextrecession.wordpress.com, is sponsoring a major international conference in London from 19-20 September. The conference, which takes place within walking distance of the British Library – where Marx conducted his research – will explore the relevance of Marx’s ‘Capital’ to contemporary issues such as crisis, imperialism, social reproduction, class struggles and communism.

The event will bring together world-leading scholars in the Marxist critique of political economy, including colleagues from King’s College London, Professor Alex Callincos and Dr Lucia Pradella, who will explore ‘continuing capital in the face of the present’, and ‘Marx’s capital and the power of labour: imperialism, migration and workers’ struggles’ respectively.

The Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy has recognised the significance of the conference by providing support through the Faculty Research Fund. Established in 2015-16, the Research Fund provides enabling resources for researchers to conduct excellent, ambitious research dealing with critical societal issues. SSPP recognises that the development of ground-breaking research requires up-front investment in the formulation of ideas, the creation of networks, the preparation of research proposals and projects. The next round for applications for the 2017-18 fund will open in the autumn.
