History Professor on World Service

Professor Francisco Bethencourt took part in a BBC World Service Forum programme titled 'A rainbow nation, a rainbow world?' this week.  Responding to the death of Nelson Mandela, the programme examined whether South Africa has accomplished the ideal of freedom for all, regardless of ethnic background, and discusses the global history of racism and its likely future.  The programme also featured former South African MP and equality campaigner Pregs Govender; evolutionary biologist Jonathan Marks; Soweto-born writer Niq Mhlongo; and Helene Neveu-Kringelbach, an anthropologist who researches interracial marriage.

The Forum will be broadcast on BBC World Service on Sunday 15 December at 00:05 and 11:05 BST and on Monday 16 December at 03:05 BST.  It will also be available online from Sunday 16 December and a podcast will be available for four weeks after the radio broadcast online or through iTunes.
