Informatics collaboration with industry to develop a glucose monitoring sensor
Dr Panos Kosmas of the Department of Informatics received a Research Grant from the Technology Strategy Board to collaborate with UK-based SME MediWise in the project ``Non-invasive glucose monitoring using high-frequency radio waves''. Dr Kosmas and his group will develop information processing algorithms to estimate glucose levels in blood samples from radio wave measurements. This feasibility project will run for one year, and the TSB award amounts to £199,806, of which £81,100 will be awarded to King’s College London.
The project will contribute towards the development of the first accurate, non-invasive, wireless glucose monitoring system, which aims to be commercially available by the project’s industrial partner in the near future. The system consists of a wearable sensor, a mobile unit for receiving and displaying the glucose data, and a cloud-based software platform which interfaces with existing electronic health systems to store and provide data access to patients, carers or medical professionals.
Dr Kosmas is a Lecturer in the Department of Informatics and member of the Centre for Telecommunications Research, specialising in various biomedical applications of radio waves and other sensing problems.
