Informatics student accepted for NYUAD Hackathon, Abu Dabi
Piotr Galar, a third-year Computer Science student from the Department of Informatics, was accepted as a participant at the 2014 New York University Abu Dhabi International Hackathon. The Annual NYUAD International Hackathon is a three-day programming marathon, during which renowned international computer science professors, founders of successful startups, technology professionals, and venture capitalists come together at NYUAD to lead teams of talented computer science students from all over the world to create mobile and web applications. The teams had three days to develop innovative applications relevant to diverse fields such as health, education, film, music, business, and science for the benefit of social good in the Arab World.
Most of the selected students come from the Arab World. However, the organisers have also selected 15 International students to join the Hackathon and come up with intriguing and innovative ideas. Piotr is the only student from a UK university who was invited to attend. The Hackathon took place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, 14-16 February 2014.
Piotr’s team developed an app to help tourists plan trips in the Arab world by generating itineraries that promote community attractions and activities and offer local volunteering opportunities.
Speaking of his experience, Piotr said “The NYUAD Hackathon was amazing! The atmosphere there was fantastic, with everyone keen to work hard together to develop their ideas. I loved every second of it and made many friends. I would recommend every King's student to apply next year and I'll hopefully meet you there, next time as a mentor.”
