Informatics Professor appointed IFIP String Algorithmics and Applications group chairman
Professor Costas Iliopoulos, Head of the Algorithms and Bioinformatics research group in the Department of Informatics, has been appointed hair of the newly formed International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) String Algorithmics and Application working group. The general assembly of IFIP, which met in Vienna in September, approved the creation of the String Algorithmics and Application group and unanimously appointed Prof Iliopoulos as the first chair of the group. The tenure of the chair is three years and is renewable once. The IFIP String Algorithmics and Application group, the first of this kind, will promote research in the field of string algorithmics and its applications such as: computational biology, text compression, natural language processing, information retrieval, data mining, pattern recognition, cryptography and computational geography and musicology. It will bring together researchers from all over the world under a broad umbrella. This will provide a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and collaborate among different research groups.
