Researchers awarded Scientific Mission Grants

Dr Alessio Langiu and Dr Solon P. Pissis of the Algorithms and Bioinformatics group in the Department of Informatics received two Short Term Scientific Mission Grants awarded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology, which provide funding for research visits to collaborating institutions.

Dr Langiu and Dr Pissis will collaborate with scientists from the Biomedical Research Foundation (BRFAA) of the Academy of Athens in Greece on software and algorithms for storing and manipulating Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data. NGS technology produces massive amounts of data that cannot be handled efficiently by state-of-the-art tools. A compress-before-store and decompress-before-use approach does not fit the requirements of NGS research: storing and manipulating requirements have to be satisfied simultaneously. During this short-term visit, Dr Langiu and Dr Pissis plan on investigating new techniques for storing and manipulating NGS data, that meet the particular requirements of the analyses to be performed by the BRFAA team.
