KCL Techference

Techference 2015

On the 26th of March, KCL Computing, Tech and Robotics societies organised Techference. Techference was a successful three hour technology driven event open to all King's students and staff irrelevant of their educational background. The event featured talks from King's student sand staff, and from two guest speakers from Major League Hacking.

Part of the focus of the Techference was on Women in Tech, and the event featured a talk on this topic given by Computer Science undergraduate students Maria Vrabie and Ana Jalba. They presented the achievements of some remarkable women in technology, and also talked about their own experience as women in tech, as students. "I am not the best programmer, but I do believe that I am neither inferior nor superior to all the men from my course; I keep working and doing things to improve" said Maria in her speech at Techference. Also, Ana strongly affirmed "I don't feel disadvantaged as being a women in technology; I love my degree and the environment offered at King's".

The Techference event was supported by a grant from the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences’ Gender Equality Student Fund, which supports student initiatives and activities that promote gender equality in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences is actively working to address the current imbalance of women working and studying in these areas and was awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2014, in recognition of our commitment to advancing women's careers in STEM. To find out more about the work we are doing in this area, please see our Women in Science webpages.
