Lecturer gives police cyber crime presentation

On Tuesday 8 April 2013 Dr Richard Overill from the Department of Informatics gave an invited presentation on Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism to the Metropolitan Police Service Security Forum at the Financial Services Authority in Canary Wharf. Around 75 attendees from the commercial, business, financial and law enforcement sectors were presented with the latest statistics on the financial impact, the attack frequency and the latest techniques employed by cyber criminals to make money from the unsuspecting individual or business.

Exfiltration of commercially sensitive intellectual property via malicious software, social engineering and 'planted' or 'turned' employees was covered, together with money laundering for transnational serious organised crime syndicates by cyber mercenaries. Politically motivated attacks ranging from the activities of the Anonymous hacker collective through the Iran-targeted US-Israeli 'Stuxnet' worm, to the commercial espionage operations of Chinese PLA Unit 61398 were some of the other topics discussed.

The presentation concluded with advice on how to reduce exposure to these internal and external threats. Later that week, Dr Overill gave a similar presentation at HSBC's Global HQ in Canary Wharf.
