Informatics Academics win $100,000 in Samsung Global Research Outreach Program

Colin Cooper and Tomasz Radzik, academics in the Algorithm and Bioinformatics Group in the Department of Informatics, have been awarded $100,000 from the Samsung Global Research Outreach (GRO) program.

The GRO program is Samsung's prestige academic research collaboration platform. The annual call for proposals is open to the world's leading universities and is highly competitive. The Department of Informatics at King’s College London is one of only 8 GRO winners in Computational Science for 2012. A full list of 2012 winners can be found on this webpage.

The Department of Informatics’ proposal 'Fast low cost methods to learn large networks' develops efficient ways to find out the structure of online networks such as Facebook and Twitter using limited but adaptive crawling.

The award, initially for 1 year, includes funding for two PhD students to work on learning the structure of dynamic networks based on smartphone data. The students receiving the award (Sang Hyuk Lee and Yiannis Siantos) contributed to the development of the proposal, and this is an appropriate reward for their efforts.

The Samsung GRO awards are extremely prestigious, and this is a first for King's College London.
