Department of Informatics hosts Science Challenge for Gifted and Talented London pupils

On 15 and 17 January 2013, King’s College London hosted the Greater London Science & Technology Challenge Finals for Gifted & Talented 13 - 15 year olds.

Each mixed-school team of four young people from Greater London has already won its local Challenge Day. Over the two days a total of 70 young people (from 41 different schools) worked in their teams on a practical robotic challenge set by members of the Department of Informatics at King’s and inspired by the activity undertaken the Department's undergraduates.

On Tuesday 15 January, Sir David Brewer, Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, attended the event to present awards to members of the winning teams.

Teachers and students enjoyed the event, one teacher saying ‘it was an amazing day, it was great to see the students so engaged in the activity and also fantastic team work’. Paul Waterworth, of MCS Projects Ltd, noted that ‘the winning teams showed so much commitment and enthusiasm in attempting to complete the undergraduate robotic activity. Many teams chose to work through their lunch breaks!’.

Academic staff and PhD students from the Centre for Robotics Research (CORE) were involved in organising the event and in helping the students on the day. Professor Kaspar Althoefer commented that ‘it was a pleasure to host these events at King’s’.
