Computer Science Taster Day A Success

The Department of Informatics hosted a Computer Science Taster Day on 8 May 2012. Taster Courses are short courses to provide Year 12 students with the opportunity to experience life at a London university before making their UCAS application. Students experience the different teaching methods used by university academics and gain an insight into the additional facilities available, whilst meeting students from across the UK.  Around forty students from over thirty schools attended the Taster Day.

Students attending had the opportunity to learn about robots and robotics, agents, cyber warfare and cyber terrorism and to spend some time in the lab planning the activity of an exploratory vehicle on Mars. There was also a campus tour and a well attended lunch which gave attendees the opportunity to chat informally to the Department's academic staff. Students enjoyed the day and gave positive feedback, noting some favourite parts of the day were 'the chance to see the robotics projects which King's is carrying out', 'mobile robots and what the future can be like for robots' and 'the talks on agents and cyber-war because these were relevant to everyday life and very interesting'. The breadth of topics covered on the day was noted with one student commenting that there was a 'diverse range of lectures giving a real taster of every part of Computer Science'.
