World leading headache expert joins King's

Professor Peter Goadsby, an internationally renowned neurologist in the field of headache and migraine, has joined the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King’s College London and will be delivering his inaugural lecture on Friday 9th May 2014.

His research interests are in the basic mechanisms of head pain in both experimental and clinical settings, and translating these insights into better management of headache disorders. 

As well as joining the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the IoP at King’s, Professor Goadsby has been appointed Director of the NIHR/Wellcome Trust King’s Clinical Research Facility (CRF), a cutting edge and unique medical research facility with a focus on three areas of activity: experimental medicine, clinical trials and cell therapy.

He brings world-leading research expertise across the entire spectrum in headache disorders, from experimental models to clinical trials, allowing new discoveries to benefit patients in the shortest possible time. We also welcome Peter as Director of the Clinical Research Facility, a world-class venue for innovative experimental medicine.”

Professor Goadsby obtained his basic medical degree and training at the University of New South Wales, Australia, and his neurology training at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. After post-doctoral work at Cornell University in New York and Universite VII in Paris, and post-graduate neurology training at Queen Square, London, he returned to the University of New South Wales, and the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney as a consultant neurologist and Professor of Neurology. 

He was appointed a Wellcome Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurology, University College London in 1995, and was Professor of Clinical Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London until 2007. 

He then moved to become Professor of Neurology and Director of the Headache Centre at the University of California, San Francisco, before joining King’s in 2013.

Professor Goadsby’s inaugural lecture ‘From bench to bedside and back: Improving care for headache disorders’ will take place on Friday 9th May 2014 in the IoP Wolfson Lecture Theatre at 5.30pm.
