New fellows of King's College London

Jude Kelly CBE, Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre, is among 13 distinguished individuals to be elected to the fellowship or honorary fellowship of King’s College London this year. Ms Kelly received her fellowship on 25 July at the Barbican Centre, London, at one of King’s 12 graduation ceremonies this month.
More than 4,100 King’s graduates are attending the university’s ceremonies, held at Southwark Cathedral on 4 and 5 July 2017, and at the Barbican Centre on 24, 25, 26 and 27 July. Graduates are presented to Sir Christopher Geidt, Chairman of the College Council, and other members of the College Council, and to the President & Principal of King’s, Professor Edward Byrne AC, and to King’s Provosts and Vice-Presidents.
The fellowship of King’s dates back to 1847 and marks contributions by exceptional individuals to King’s and/or to wider society. The fellowship is awarded to current or former staff or students or members of King’s Council, in recognition of their exceptional achievement and/or service to King’s. The honorary fellowship is awarded to individuals from outside King’s in recognition of their contribution to wider society.
The following eight people have been elected fellows of King’s College London (FKC):
Revd Richard Coles is an Anglican vicar, King’s alumnus, musician and well-known broadcaster who, as a former member of the Communards, recorded the highest-selling UK single of 1986.
Dr Tim Hands became Headmaster of Winchester College in 2016, having previously been head of Magdalen College School, Oxford since 2008. An alumnus of King’s, he is an expert on the work of Thomas Hardy.
Dr Omar Ishrak is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Medtronic, the world’s leading medical technology company, which supports Biomedical Engineering research at King’s. He is currently co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Health and Healthcare Community.
Professor Frank Kelly is Professor of Environmental Health and Director of the Environmental Research Group at King’s. Under his leadership in the last 20 years the ERG has become a world leader in monitoring air pollution in cities and improving public awareness of this issue.
Professor Dianne Rekow is a distinguished researcher and orthodontist who was Executive Dean of King’s College London Dental Institutefrom 2012 to 2016 and is a former President of the International Association for Dental Research.
Steven Rhodes is a barrister who has made a great and sustained contribution to the College over several years through his enthusiastic and effective leadership of the King’s College London Alumni Association (KCLA) and his establishment of the KCLA Games and Duel Day.
Julie Thomas is Director of Protocol in the Principal’s & President’s Office at King’s. Since she joined King’s in 1990, she has been at the right hand successively of four principals, and has overseen many of the College’s most successful events and occasions.
Professor Evelyn Welch MBE is Provost and Senior Vice President forArts & Sciences at King’s and Professor of Renaissance Studies. She is the Chair of Trustees of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Chair of the Warburg Institute Advisory Council and sits on the British Library Advisory Board.
The following five people have been elected honorary fellows of King’s College London (Hon FKC):
Dr Aron Harilela is a Hong Kong-based international business leader and educational philanthropist, who has played an important role in the establishment of the new Business School at King’s.
Barry Humphries AO CBE is one of the world’s most renowned satirical writers and performers, famous in particular for his creation of comic but discomforting personae such as the housewife ‘gigastar’ Dame Edna Everage.
Jude Kelly CBE is Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre, London: Britain’s largest cultural institution. She has directed over 100 productions including those for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, English National Opera and in London’s West End.
Lord Powell of Bayswater KCMG OBE is a Crossbench member of the House of Lords who was Private Secretary and adviser on foreign affairs and defence to Prime Ministers Baroness Margaret Thatcher and Sir John Major. He is a member of the King’s fundraising Campaign Board.
Philip Yeo is the Chairman of SPRING Singapore, Economic Development Innovations Singapore Pte Ltd and Accuron Technologies Pte Ltd. He has played a key role in supporting Singaporeans to study at top universities around the world, including at King’s.
