New Year's Honours
King's College London is delighted to announce that a number of King's staff and alumni have been recognised in the 2017 New Year’s Honours list.
Professor Ghulam Mufti, Haemato-Oncology, has been awarded an OBE for services to Haematological Medicine.
Professor Mufti has published over 400 papers and chapters in scientific journals and textbooks on leukaemias and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). He heads the research groups at King’s working on the molecular genetics of MDS/aplastic anaemia/acute myeloid leukaemia, and is a member of the working group that produced national and international guidelines on the treatment and prognosis of MDS. He is also a founding member and chair of the UK MDS Forum.
Jenny Waldman, a Member of the Circle of Cultural Fellows, has been awarded a CBE for her services to the Arts.
Jenny Waldman is Director of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s official First World War Centenary Cultural Programme. She was Creative Producer of the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Jenny has worked with King’s over the last three years as a Sector Associate to the Cultural Institute.
Emeritus Professor Sir Cyril Chantler, Guy's, King's, and St Thomas's Medical School, has been awarded a GBE for services to Leadership in Healthcare.
Receiving a Knighthood for services to medicine in 1996, Professor Chantler previously served as the Dean of the Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical and Dental Schools, where he was also the Children Nationwide Medical Research Fund Professor of Paediatric Nephrology before retiring in 2000. From 1997 to 2000 he was also Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of London.
Former Vice-Principal at King’s Professor Barry Ife, CBE, has been awarded a Knighthood for services to Performing Arts Education.
Professor Ife was appointed to the Cervantes Chair of Spanish at King’s in 1988. He became Head of the School of Humanities in 1989 and Vice-Principal in 1996. From 2003-2004, Professor Ife was Acting Principal. During this time he oversaw projects such as the conversion of the former Public Records Office into the Maughan Library and information services centre, and the redevelopment of the Strand campus.
Alumna Dr Katherine Jane Grainger, CBE, has been awarded a Damehood for services to Sport and Charity.
Rower Dr Grainger was awarded her PhD in Law in 2013 alongside a Fellowship of the College. She is currently Great Britain's most decorated female Olympian, with five Olympic medals to her name, including a silver medal won in the double sculls at the Rio Olympics last year.
King’s Fellow Sir Richard Eyre has been awarded a Companion of Honour (CH) for services to Drama.
The director and playwright was awarded a CBE in 1992 before being awarded with a Knighthood in 1997. He was director of the National Theatre from 1987-1997 and his work has included productions for the West End and Broadway. In 2015 he became a King’s Fellow.
Honorary Fellow Antony Beevor has been awarded a Knighthood for services in support of Armed Forces Professional Development.
Antony Beevor is one of Britain’s most distinguished historians: the author of a series of prize-winning books in 30 different languages on the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War. He was awarded Honorary Fellowship last year.
Professor Jane Sandall from the Division of Women’s Health received a CBE honour for services to midwifery and women’s health.

- Dr Brinder Mahon (Medicine, 1995) for services to Education
- Miss Ailsa Rutter (Nursing Studies, 1993) for services to Tobacco Control
- Mr Jasvir Singh (History) for voluntary service to Faith Communities and Social Cohesion

- Dr Jeffrey Tate (Medicine, 1967) for services to British music overseas
