Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Moot Competition 2013

For the third consecutive year, King’s has progressed through the preliminary rounds of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Moot Competition.

The 6th FDI Moot Competition was held at the Frankfurt International Arbitration Centre in Frankfurt, Germany on 24-26 October 2013. The team consisted of LLB students Raashi Mukherji and Michelle Liptakova and LLM students Enea Visoka, Carolina Fernandes and Rodolfo Nygaard.

The team placed first in the preliminary rounds after competing against four schools, including, New York University and the University of Latvia. On 25 October, King’s faced off against the Jagiellonian University in the Round of 16. Representing the Claimants, King’s won on jurisdiction, but narrowly lost on the merits. Assistant Professor Michael Devine, the presiding arbitrator for the tribunal, remarked that it was an extremely close match.

Ultimately, King’s reached the Round of 16, and was ranked 5th in the overall competition out of over 40 teams. Ms Raashi Mukherji was awarded an Honourable Mention   Advocate Award for her outstanding performance in four rounds, ranking 11th overall. In addition, Mr. Rodolfo Nygaard was ranked 27th  in the top 50 advocates.

The team was coached by Mona Pinchis under the supervision of Dr Federico Ortino. Mona Pinchis explained that these results reflected the students’ stellar work ethic and commitment to the competition. She said:

“This year’s team deserves high praise for their teamwork and dedication. In six months, they managed to learn what normally takes other students years to learn. The many hours spent researching and practicing have paid off, as the King’s team was regarded as one of the best teams in attendance.

I am also very pleased with Raashi’s award. She is an incredible advocate – strong, smart, and able to think on her feet. Raashi was able to reinforce every sharp comment with a deep understanding of the law. Her progress this year is testament to her hard work.”
