Respect as Honour and As Accountability

Professor Stephen DarwallRenowned moral philosopher Professor Stephen Darwall spoke at The Dickson Poon School of Law last night.
Professor Darwall talked about two conceptions of respect. One based on honour, the other and recognition and on what he calls the "second-personal standpoint." The lecture was very well attended by undergraduate, PhDs, and King's academic staff, including King's philosophers such as Thomas Pink, Joseph Raz, Thomas Pogge, Tom Campbell, and Leif Wenar.
Professor Darwall teaches in the Department of Philosophy at Yale University. He taught for twenty-four years at the University of Michigan and for twelve at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has written extensively on related and other matters in moral philosophy and is perhaps most renowned for introducing the concept of a “second-person reason” in his influential and widely admired book The Second-Person Standpoint.
Professor Darwall is visiting the School as a guest of the KJuris: Jurisprudence at King’s research group.
