Satvinder Juss at the European Court of Human Rights

Satvinder Juss, Professor in The Dickson Poon School of Law, attended the European Court of Human Rights on 27 November 2013 to take part in a Grand Chamber hearing on France’s ban on wearing the full-face veil in public.
France banned the public wearing of most face coverings in 2011, setting fines for offenders of up to 150 euros. A young Muslim woman is challenging France's full-face veil ban at the European Court of Human Rights, in Strasbourg.
Professor Juss said: 'The diversity of religious practice in Europe can only be secured when the values of "secularism" "equality" and "liberty" are harmonised into a seamless whole. One value cannot be set up against the other. It is for the Court to ensure this.'
The court’s ruling is not expected until the middle of next year.

Satvinder Juss is a human rights expert focusing on policy-oriented work. He regularly appears as a practising Barrister in the High Court and the Court of Appeal and is listed as a Legal Expert in the Directory of Legal Experts.
