John Toulmin Lecture in Law & Psychiatry

Professor Elyn R Saks

More than 200 people attended the Annual John Toulmin Lecture in Law & Psychiatry on Tuesday 18 March to hear Professor Elyn R Saks talk about her personal experience of living with schizophrenia.

The Principal, Professor Sir Rick Trainor introduced Professor Saks saying 'it’s hard to imagine a more appropriate lecturer for this series than Elyn Saks because she epitomises the link between law and psychiatry on which these lectures are based'.

Elyn Saks is Professor of Law and Psychiatry at University of Southern California Law School and author of The Centre Cannot Hold: A Memoir of My Schizophrenia, which was also the title of her lecture at King’s. Professor Saks gave an insightful and honest account of how she learned to live with this debilitating disease.

The John Toulmin Lecture series was established in 2012 following a benefaction from Senior Circuit Judge and former member of King’s College Council, Judge John Toulmin and his wife Carolyn. Their generous donation established a lecture series exploring issues connecting law and psychiatry to enhance a collaborative relationship between the two Schools. The 2014 lecture was the second in the lecture series. The first lecture in the series was delivered by Dickson Poon Distinguished Visitor, Lord Judge.
