On 4 and 5 October, Dr Nicola Palmer, Lecturer in Criminal Law, The Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London, and Phil Clark (SOAS) broadcast a radio documentary entitled, "Finding It within Ourselves", on experiences of political violence in Rwanda and Uganda at the Internazionale media festival in Ferrara, Italy.
The annual event is one of Italy's largest festivals of ideas and attracts journalists, filmmakers, writers and artists from around the world. This year's programme included Nigerian-American novelist, Teju Cole, the Kenyan commentator, Binyavanga Wainaina, and the British author and critic, John Berger.
Clark and Palmer, along with a team of Rwandan, Ugandan and South African collaborators, produced the documentary in 2013, based on interviews exploring reconciliation and forgiveness with Rwandan and Ugandan communities recovering from mass conflict. In Ferrara, it was broadcast with Italian subtitles to two full houses in a chamber beneath the 14th century Castello Estense.
The radio documentary - which has also been translated into Kinyarwanda and Luo - was funded by the Fetzer Institute. This was the programme's first airing in Europe after broadcasts last year in Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa.
The audio of the documentary in all three languages and a full list of collaborators can be found on the SOAS website.
