Dean visits Hong Kong and India
Professor David Caron, Dean of The Dickson Poon School of Law, visited Hong Kong and India last month as part of the School’s growing activities in South-East Asia.
The Dean’s visit to Hong Kong included giving the annual Kaplan Lecture on the title Light and Dark in International Arbitration. The lecture enjoys the sponsorship of Neil Kaplan CBE QC SBS, a King’s alumnus and leading figure in arbitration in Asia. The lecture took place at the Hong Kong Club and was hosted by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Over one hundred attendees were present, including many alumni. Mr Kaplan also sponsors an undergraduate prize at the School in arbitration studies.

Dean Caron, accompanied by Dr Cian Murphy, visited Jindal Global Law School to meet with Vice Chancellor C. Raj Kumar, and former Icelandic Ambassador to India Professor Gudmunder Eiriksson, an alumnus of King’s. Dean Caron also held a seminar on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and Trans-Pacific Partnership attended by guests and members of the Jindal faculty. The visit to Delhi also saw Dean Caron, Dr Murphy, and Ambassador Eiriksson attend a dinner hosted by King’s alumnus Mr Ravi Nath of Rajinder Narain & Co law firm.

Dean Caron and Dr Murphy were attendees at the International Chamber of Commerce Young Arbitrator’s Forum conference: The Changing Face of International Arbitration in India. The conference was sponsored by the King’s Alumni of Delhi and the Indian International and Domestic Arbitration Centre. Dean Caron gave the keynote address before a panel discussion covered contemporary challenges in arbitration in India – including the recent Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Ordinance of 2015. The conference was followed by a dinner hosted by Supreme Court Advocate Ms Geeta Luthra at the request of Mr Arun Chawla, Asst Secretary General, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The final leg of the visit took place in Mumbai. Dean Caron said of the visit: 'Our School has strong and growing links with partners and alumni throughout South-East Asia and in particular in both Hong Kong and India. It is pleasure to travel and meet so many King’s alumni and friends in partner institutions and law firms across the region. We look forward to working with them to develop programmes and discover transnational solutions to our common global problems.'
The visit by Dean Caron and Dr Murphy was facilitated by Aditya Malkani, King’s Worldwide’s Country Head for India. It follows a visit earlier in the Autumn by Professor Peer Zumbansen, Director of the Transnational Law Institute, and a further visit later this year by Professor Satvinder Juss, Acting Vice Dean, International.
