Discussing human rights for LGBTI community in la Francophonie

Professor Robert Wintemute recently provided the opening lecture at the Equality and Legality Conference in Montreal, Canada.

Following on from the Prime Minister of Québec Philippe Couillard, Professor Wintemute spoke on how human rights of LGBTI people vary in ‘la Francophonie’. La Francophonie is an international organisation of French-speaking states and governments, similar to the Commonwealth.

Professor Wintemute said that he is optimistic for the future of LGBTI human rights in ‘la Francophonie’, after presenting data showing that 74% of member countries have decriminalised same-sex sexual activity, compared with only 29% in the Commonwealth.

The conference was part of Canada Pride Montreal 2017 and events celebrating the 375th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Montreal in 1642.
