Two undergraduate students from The Dickson Poon School of Law recently attended the Law School Global League (LSGL) Summer School in Mexico. Ana Nash and Louis Austin travelled to Mexico City to take part in the programme on ITAM's campus.

The LSGL Summer School taught four research themes across two weeks, which brought global issues into discussion with professors and students from universities from all parts of the world.

Second year student Ana Nash said; 'The 5th annual LSGL Summer School at ITAM, Mexico City, was an excellent experience, both academically and socially. The greatest strength of the course, in my opinion, is the mix of law students from across the world, whose different cultural and social backgrounds led to the intersection of many diverse perspectives on a range of legal issues. Over the duration of the course, I made great friends with many of the students, and I feel confident that I will see some of them again. Attending the academic conference also allowed me to gain academic contacts which will no doubt be useful in future, including during my upcoming Erasmus exchange to Italy.

The classes themselves gave us the chance to really widen our legal and general knowledge, by learning topics never usually included on an English Law course. Furthermore, the teaching staff greatly enhanced the experience, as their expertise was evident, and their enthusiasm and passion energized debate and discussion in class. I personally especially liked the Consumer Law and Technology module, which explained much of the legal context behind headline cases such as that of Uber or Facebook. It also gave a glimpse into the potential issues that we, as tomorrow’s lawyers, will have to solve'.

English Law & French Law student Louis Austin said;

'The Law School Global League summer school at ITAM brought together intelligent and engaging students from different social and legal backgrounds, with a teaching staff passionate about their subjects, but also eager to hear the input of a unique group of young legal minds. I felt respected and challenged by my professors, but also by my tenacious fellow students, who shared and defended the legal principles of their country with passion. Emotions ran high on the issue of offers and invitations to treat, which staunchly divided the civil lawyers from the common law jurists. The ability to see our legal system from such drastically different view points was a priceless opportunity, and has helped me contextualize and complement my legal knowledge.

In addition to the academic learning, the cultural experience of discovering Mexico City was breath-taking. The kindness and warmth of Mexicans, particularly the “buddies” assigned to us by ITAM, made me feel at home in what is nonetheless an enormous and impressive city. After a couple of days we already felt like locals thanks to the care provided by the school and its amazing students. The LSGL summer school was an amazing experience that flew by and sadly had to end, not without leaving me with profoundly touching memories'.
