King's Hosts Motor Vehicle Insurance Conference

A one day conference focusing on compulsory liability insurance for motor vehicle users took place on 2 April 2019 at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London.

Around 70 delegates joined the speakers to discuss the fundamental principles behind the compulsory insurance regime which is a mixture of domestic as well as EU law. The conference also explored the developments and implications of two very recent Supreme Court decisions addressing steps taken to ensure that self-driving vehicles are insured.

Dr Ozlem Gurses who organised the conference highlighted the growing popularity of insurance law in the curriculum as playing a key role in the conference's success.

“Insurance law education is growing at The Dickson Poon School of Law," Dr Gurses said. "Students’ interest in our insurance law courses has been increasing steadily. The feedback received from the speakers as well as delegates were all very positive. The conference papers will be published in a book and I am keen to organise similar events to contribute to the teaching of insurance law at King's.”

Dr Gurses also explained that by bringing practitioners, academics and students together, the conference also contributed to the School's commitment to engaging with London.

"The insurance law being taught at King's is welcomed by practitioners in London which accommodates the biggest insurance market in the world," she said, "Engagement with London is one of the university's key priorities and the conference contributed to this by bringing academics, barristers, insurers, brokers, members of the judiciary, and public bodies such as the Motor Insurers’ Bureau together. The conference presented a comparative analysis of the most recent developments in the area of compulsory motor vehicle insurance."

Dr Gurses hopes to captialise on the success of the conference and is planning another event for 2020 which will make further contributions to developments in this area of law and insurance law education.
