Dr Cian Murphy to contribute case studies for major project on EU Security and Counter-Terrorism

Dr Cian Murphy, lecturer at The Dickson Poon School of Law, is undertaking key empirical research to critique the effectiveness of European security legislation as part of a collaborative project.

The project, ‘Securing Europe Through Counter-Terrorism: Impact, Legitimacy & Effectiveness’ (SECILE), is an EU-funded Framework Programme 7 research project which will inform the way counter-terrorism law should be shaped.

King’s College London is working in partnership with the University of Durham, Statewatch, the Peace Research Institute Oslo, the National Maritime College of Ireland at the Cork Institute of Technology, the Centre for Irish and European Security and the Supreme Court of Latvia.

Dr Murphy will play an integral role in producing two case studies – one on the operation of European Arrest Warrant for terrorist offences, and another on EU border surveillance and the proposals for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). He will receive assistance from post-doctoral and doctoral researchers at the School. To develop these case studies, Dr Murphy and the SECILE team will liaise with more than 30 representatives from key European agencies, government and non-government bodies.

The case studies will form part of the project’s end product – a final report of usable guidelines to be presented to policy-makers in Brussels in 2014. Read more about the project here.

Dr Murphy's work on this project builds on his recent book EU Counter-terrorism Law: Pre-emption & the Rule of Law and his forthcoming collection EU Security & Justice Law: After Lisbon & Stockholm.
