Lord Judge gives Inaugural John Toulmin Lecture in Law and Psychiatry at King's

More than 120 people attended the Edmond J Safra Lecture Theatre last Wednesday evening, to hear the inaugural John Toulmin Lecture in Law and Psychiatry given by Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice.

The lecture entitled Half a Century of Change: The Evidence of Child Victims addressed issues around competence and corroboration and the development of special measures, and the arrangements for young children to give oral testimony

Speaking after the lecture John Toulmin's widow Carolyn said "John, an old friend of Lord Judge, would have been delighted by the success of the evening and moved by the warmth of Lord Judge's tribute to him. The wise, humane and stimulating lecture was a perfect inaugural launch of the series which was set up to foster collaboration between the Dickson Poon School of Law and the Institute of Psychiatry.

In tracing the history of the law's attitude to the evidence of children over the past two centuries and more, and the advances and improvements in their treatment in the past 50 years, Lord Judge pointed the way to even greater understanding and progress in the treatment of children and in finding the balance between the innocent defendant and the protection of the child witness."
