Lord Phillips invites students to Garter Day 2013
Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, Visiting Professor at The Dickson Poon School of Law, invited a group of high achieving students to attend the Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle on Monday 17 June. These included two top achieving students from the Anglo-German Law programme and recent PhD graduate and Olympic Gold Medalist, Katherine Grainger. Lord Phillips also invited Julia Gibby, Adam Tupper and Ashleigh Collins as representatives of School staff.
The Order of the Garter is the highest order of chivalry existing in England to this day. It was founded in 1348. Members of the Order include the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, other Royal Members of the Order and not more than twenty-four Knight Companions of the Order.
Lord Phillips was appointed as a new Knight Companion of the Order in 2011.
Each year, he and other Companions of the Order meet with the Queen and Royal Members of the Order for a special service in St George’s Chapel. Any new Members of the Order are invested and installed on this day. This year, Air Chief Marshall, Lord Jock Stirrup was invested and installed by the Queen as a Knight Companion of the Order.
After the investiture of Lord Stirrup and a private luncheon given by the Queen for the Royal Family, the members of the Order and their spouses take part in a procession through the grounds of Windsor Castle and into St George’s Chapel. The Constable and Governor of the Castle led the procession which featured Military Knights of Windsor, the Officers of Arms, the Knights and Ladies of the Garter, the Royal Members and Her Majesty the Queen.
Students watched the procession to St George's Chapel and were able to meet with Lord Phillips at the end of day to celebrate their recent academic successes with him.
