Lord Phillips joins King's

Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, the first president of the UK Supreme Court, will join King’s this week as Dickson Poon Distinguished Fellow and Visiting Professor in The Dickson Poon School of Law.

Lord Phillips’ appointment is part of a £40million programme of investment made possible by the generous gift of £20million from Mr Dickson Poon CBE.

Lord Phillips was appointed the first president of the UK Supreme Court in 2009 where he served until recently retiring from the role. He was previously the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and has served on many legal councils and advisory committees.

Professor Timothy Macklem, Head of School, said he is delighted to welcome Lord Phillips to the School: ‘Lord Phillips brings an incomparable wealth of knowledge and experience, having served the legal system to the highest level, as the first president of the UK Supreme Court.  This will be of enormous benefit to our staff, students and other partners across King’s.

‘His appointment is just one example of the many opportunities that have been made possible by the very generous donation from Mr Dickson Poon.’

Speaking of his appointment, Lord Phillips said he is looking forward to commencing his research with The Dickson Poon School of Law:  ‘Having worked in the justice system for over 50 years, it will be an interesting change to be more involved in the world of academia.

‘The proximity of King’s to the legal heart of London will keep me connected to my roots as I contribute to legal scholarship at one of the finest Law Schools in the UK and indeed, the world. I’m delighted to be joining the School at a time when so many opportunities are being created by Mr Poon’s generous gift.’
