Lord Phillips leads roundtable on human rights
Visiting Professor Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers chaired a discussion yesterday at the Inner Temple on the proportionality of human rights. His experience as former president of the UK Supreme Court placed him in an excellent position to chair the discussion.
Jovially opening the session, Lord Phillips admitted the breadth of legal scholarship in the room intimidated him, being a practitioner of the law rather than an academic. 'In my reading of proportionality, its history is traced back to the Magna Carta, though I'm sure some of the philosophical minds in the room can trace its roots to Socrates,' he added jokingly.
The discussion that ensued was commensurately robust as compared to the rest of the sessions in two-day conference programme, organised by the Freedom Rights Project.
Many scholars from The Dickson Poon School of Law presented at and participated in the conference, including Professor Guglielmo Verdirame, Professor Joseph Raz, Professor Leif Wenar and Mr Nicholaos Voulgaris. They were joined by leading scholars from around the world, including current visiting professors to The Dickson Poon School of Law, Professor Allen Buchanan from Duke and Professor Thomas Pogge from Yale.
