Replacing the Millennium Development Goals

Last week, Professor Thomas Pogge, Visiting Professor at The Dickson Poon School of Law, presented his insight into replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at an event held in the Maughan Library.

Discussing a number of shortcomings with existing MDGs, Professor Pogge made recommendations for the direction that should be taken with the goals that will replace them.

Professor Pogge said he hoped that the set of goals would be real:

‘Let them be real. We need measurable goals, with specific agents responsible for achieving them. We should be defining what we are measuring in advance, not in hindsight.’

Professor Pogge was joined by a panel of experts, including Professor Leif Wenar, Chair of Ethics at The Dickson Poon School of Law, Catarina Tully from FromOverHere, Claire Melamed from the Overseas Development Institute and Owen Barder from the Centre for Global Development.

A robust question and answer session followed Professor Pogge’s presentation, with members of the audience from prominent interested organisations, institutions, charities and groups.

The event was part of the thought leadership series at the School and its vision to be recognised as a global leader in transnational legal research and education.
