Celebration event to mark 'ground breaking' new medical curriculum
With the first students due to the start the new MBBS Curriculum 2020 at King’s in September this year, the vision and plans were unveiled last Thursday night at an event hosted by the President & Principal, Professor Edward Byrne AC.
MBBS Curriculum 2020 is a new medical curriculum designed to train the next generation of doctors to transform patient and population healthcare. The curriculum, which has been two years in planning was outlined last night by Professor Stuart Carney, Dean of Medical Education to an audience of head teachers, students and members of the MBBS Curriculum Committee. Professor Sir Robert Lechler, Vice Principal Health, set the scene describing the changing health landscape while Professor Karen O’Brien, Vice Principal Education, who had chaired the Curriculum Committee, explained how our medical education is enriched through collaborations across the multi-faculty university.
Professor Carney described the ambitions of the new curriculum which was to create not only outstanding patient centred doctors but graduates who are critic
al scientific thinkers, leaders and champions for mental health. He explained the new curriculum framework which challenges the traditional approach to teaching medicine, brings the biomedical and populations sciences to life, promotes a whole-person approach to patient care and provides regular feedback to students on their performance.
Curriculum 2020 was described as ‘Ground breaking’ by former Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter MP who attended the event last night at the Guy’s campus. He tweeted that the curriculum has an ‘important emphasis on integrated mental and physical healthcare’.
Professor Stuart Carney said, ‘The event was an important milestone in the project time line – to say thank you to those who have been involved from its inception. These include colleagues from our partner NHS Trusts, our students and also our staff and a number of external experts who have contributed to our thinking. Importantly it has been an opportunity for King’s to engage with the many schools and sixth form colleges who have the role of advising students on careers in medicine. We believe that we have something special to offer.'
