Professor Stuart Carney is awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrists President's Medal

Professor Stuart Carney, Dean of Medical Education and Vice Dean International has been awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrists President’s Medal. He was presented with the medal on Thursday 29 June at a ceremony during the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress in London.

The award recognises his contribution to education and training in psychiatry including the prominence now given to mental health in the UK Foundation Programme. 

Of the award, Professor Carney says: “I was genuinely surprised to be awarded the President’s Medal. But I am delighted that after almost a decade of collaborative work between Health Education England, the UK Foundation Programme and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, all foundation doctors in England now rotate through at least one four month placement in either general practice or psychiatry. This reaffirms the importance of an integrated approach to patient care and dovetails with our innovative MBBS Curriculum at King’s. 

Professor Carney joined King’s in 2013 to lead the GKT School of Medical Education. He has helped set the strategic direction for the entire continuum of UK medical education through his work as the Deputy National Director of the UK Foundation Programme and as Clinical Lead of the Shape of Training Review. Our GKT School of Medical Education will be launching a new MBBS Curriculum (Curriculum 2020) this September. Curriculum 2020 has been designed to ensure that we prepare tomorrow’s doctors to transform physical and mental healthcare through scientific excellence and collabrative leadership.
