GKT student wins place on Fulbright student leaders programme
GKT Medical student, Ahmed Kerwan, has received a Prestigious place on a Fulbright Study of the US Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders to the US, to study at the University of Tennessee at Chattoonga.
Ahmed was selected from a strong applicant pool to experience the US on a 5-week summer programme. The SUSI will examine social entrepreneurship in the United States, including the development, history, challenges, and successes of US social enterprises. Participants will visit 6 different cities including Atlanta and Boston, concluded by a trip to Washington D.C.
Commenting on receiving the place, Ahmed said: ‘I am extremely grateful for this unparalleled opportunity afforded to me by the Fulbright Commission. As a medical student, having the chance to understand how social enterprise and leadership can be applied to build happier, and healthier communities will allow me to think about my practice of Medicine in a more holistic manner. This tour includes multiple trips to other cities, so I am incredibly excited about exploring different corners of the country. The main inspiration behind applying for this Fulbright scholarship is studying leadership theory under educators such as Professor Edward Byrne, and Professor Stuart Carney, as part of the Principal’s Global Leadership Award.’
Penny Egan CBE, Executive Director, US-UK Fulbright Commission said: ‘A period of study abroad is a great way to broaden your horizons and make you stand out from the crowd. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a taste of American higher education, and as part of a high achieving cohort, this small group of students will gain immensely from the experience.’
The US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only bi-lateral, transatlantic scholarship programme, offering awards and summer programmes for study or research in any field, at any accredited US or UK university. The Commission is part of the Fulbright programme conceived by Senator J William Fulbright in the aftermath of World War II to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange. Award recipients and summer programme participants will be the future leaders for tomorrow and support the “special relationship” between the US and UK.
The Commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards the Commission looks not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to the recipient’s home country upon returning.
Fulbright Summer Programmes cover all participant costs. In addition, Fulbright summer participants receive a distinctive support and cultural education programme including: visa processing, a comprehensive pre-departure orientation, enrichment opportunities in country, a re-entry session and opportunity to join our alumni networks.
