Beyond a traditional sports science degree

King’s Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine today launches a new undergraduate programme in Sports & Exercise Medical Sciences which will take its first students in September 2018.

This clinically orientated sports and exercise medical science degree offers expert teaching in physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and psychology – unlocking the science that underpins human performance and injury/disease prevention.

Ranked 6th in the UK for Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism (REF2014), King’s expertise spans skeletal, cardiac and respiratory muscles, ageing, tissue regeneration and environmental physiology - few institutions carry out research on human physiology which encompasses such a diverse range.

In addition, the course offers the option to take specialist modules in nutrition and  psychology - both areas in which King’s are internationally renowned.

Richard Bruce, Lecturer and Programme Lead, says: ‘King’s association with sport is long standing – we have a world-class bio-analytical and pharmaceutical laboratories in which a wide range of drug-related research is carried out, from developing new treatments to devising new tests for illegal ‘performance-enhancing’ drugs.

I am really excited to be leading this programme and the opportunity it will bring for students to undertake research projects under the supervision of some of the leading scientists in the field of human performance’

With the advantage of King’s being part of an Academic Health Sciences Centre the course has been designed with a clinical strand throughout which supports the understanding of sports and exercise science in a medical context, meaning that graduates of the course can progress to a number of progress professions ranging from physiotherapy, sports nutrition, sport psychology, clinical physiology or medicine.
