Professor David Gradwell wins best Medicine textbook at BMA awards

Professor David Gradwell from the Centre of Human & Aerospace Physiological, edited a core textbook; “Ernsting's Aviation and Space Medicine, 5th Edition”. This textbook won 1st prize in the ‘Medicine’ category at the recent BMA Medical Book Awards 2017.

Gradwells textbook is aimed at civil and military aviation medicine practitioners, and those with a wider interest in the medical problems of professional or recreational flying, air transport and the aviation industry

Gradwells textbook is among the greats. Kings College alumni John Ernsting edited the original “Aviation Medicine” textbook. John graduated in Physiology (1949) and Medicine (1952) at Guy’s Hospital Medical School.  John developed the pressure jerkins that enable pilots to function at high altitude, with a range of experiments on himself and his students that would be an anathema on a modern COSHE form.

BMA president Professor Sir John Temple said of Gradwells textbook:

“I would recommend this volume to anyone interested in aviation and space medicine looking to further their understanding; I found its content to be engaging, challenging and diverse. Its breadth of information lends itself as an excellent reference guide. The volume contains a wealth of information on the subject, including physiological principles and clinical considerations.”
